Goa activists demand rejection of new offshore casino vessel proposal
Goa activists reject new offshore casino vessel proposal

Panaji: Activists from the Ponnjekars Against Casinos group met the Captain of Ports on Thursday, demanding that authorities outright reject Delta Corp’s proposal to bring a 112-metre-long offshore casino vessel into the Mandovi river. The group also insisted that the Deltin Royale casino, operating onboard the MV Horseshoe vessel, be removed from its temporary location near the old secretariat.

Activists voice concerns over delays

Chryselle Dias, a local resident, stated, “When we met the Captain of Ports in February, he said the Deltin Royale casino would move out of its temporary location by April 30. It is now May 7, and they claim the vessel cannot be shifted because mooring work could not be completed due to the approaching monsoons. These are excuses.” The activists argue that the offshore casino is situated close to a residential area, and the music, strobe lights, and vehicular movement at night disturb residents.

Demand for clear licensing policy

The group has also demanded that the government categorically deny permission for Delta Corp’s new offshore casino. Activist Sabina Martins emphasized, “The government must take a clear stand: when a licence is issued for a vessel, it is for that specific size. If a new, larger vessel arrives, a fresh licence must be obtained. You cannot operate a new, larger vessel under the same licence.” The activists urged authorities to enforce regulations strictly and prevent any further expansion of casino operations in the region.
