On Friday, three senior Cabinet ministers—Amit Shah, Hardeep Singh Puri, and Nirmala Sitharaman—unanimously labeled these claims as unfounded "rumors" and ruled out any such restrictive measures.
Ministers Issue Strong Reassurances on Fuel Security
Home Minister Amit Shah directly accused opposition parties of spreading panic regarding the West Asia crisis, including the baseless assertion that a lockdown could be enforced. "I want to assure everyone. Do not fear, nothing will happen. We have adequate reserves of petroleum products," Shah stated emphatically. He highlighted that while numerous nations have implemented emergency protocols, India is strategically navigating the situation to safeguard normal daily life for its citizens, ensuring consistent gas supply to households remains uninterrupted.
Petroleum Minister Condemns "Harmful" Panic-Mongering
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri characterized attempts to incite fear as "harmful and irresponsible," urging the public to maintain composure, responsibility, and unity. "Rumours of a lockdown in India are completely false. Let me state this clearly — there is no such proposal under consideration by govt of India," Puri declared. He acknowledged the volatile global landscape but emphasized India's proven resilience during periods of uncertainty. The government is vigilantly tracking real-time developments across energy sectors, supply chains, and essential commodities, implementing necessary actions to guarantee seamless availability of fuel and other critical supplies. "We are fully prepared to handle emerging challenges," Puri affirmed.
Finance Minister Rejects "Baseless" Claims, Rules Out Covid-Like Restrictions
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also rebuffed the lockdown speculation as "baseless," expressing apprehension over statements from certain political figures hinting at shortages and impending restrictions. "I want to reassure people that there shall be no lockdown. Such remarks coming from those in political domains are worrisome," she remarked, firmly stating that there would be no recurrence of the stringent restrictions witnessed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Government Confirms Robust Energy Stockpiles
Official data released on Thursday underscores the nation's preparedness, revealing that India currently possesses:
- Two months' worth of oil supplies
- One month's reserve of LPG supplies
Additionally, arrangements have been made for an extra two months of crude supplies, with further LPG shipments en route from various international sources.
Ministry Officials Blame Misinformation for Panic Buying
During a press briefing, petroleum ministry officials attributed recent panic buying and lengthy queues at petrol pumps and LPG distribution centers to rampant misinformation. Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma clarified, "There is no crisis or shortage. Our stocks of petrol and diesel are sufficient, and LPG supplies have been ensured." This statement aims to quell public anxiety and discourage unnecessary hoarding, reinforcing the government's commitment to stable energy access despite external geopolitical pressures.
