Gujarat Chief Minister Condemns Opposition for Blocking Women's Reservation Bill

Gandhinagar: In a sharp rebuke to the Congress and its allies, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel declared on Sunday that opposition parties have gravely insulted "naari shakti" by obstructing the women's reservation bill in Parliament. Speaking at the state BJP headquarters, Patel asserted that the "double-faced politics" of these parties now stands fully exposed before the public.

Congress Accused of Negative Politics and Dynastic Obsession

Patel attributed the bill's derailment to what he described as the Congress party's long history of negative politics and dynastic obsession. The proposed legislation aims to provide 33% reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. "Many individuals have worked solely to promote dynastic politics," Patel stated. "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, those associated with the Congress culture are unable to tolerate the transformative changes occurring across the nation."

Exposing Double-Faced Stance on Women's Empowerment

The Chief Minister highlighted a stark contradiction in the opposition's approach. "On one hand, they vocally advocate for women's welfare, yet on the other hand, when presented with the opportunity to enact legal provisions that genuinely empower women, they vigorously attempt to block it," he explained. "This hypocritical stance has now been laid bare for all citizens to see."

Broader Pattern of Opposition to Key Initiatives

Patel further criticized the Congress for opposing several other significant national initiatives, including:

  • The 'One Nation, One Election' proposal
  • The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process
  • The implementation of a Uniform Civil Code
  • Flagship programs like Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and digital payments

This pattern, according to Patel, demonstrates a consistent reluctance to support progressive reforms.

Union Minister and State BJP President Weigh In

The press conference also featured remarks from Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, and state BJP President Jagdish Vishwakarma. Khadse emphasized that the women's reservation bill was designed not to favor any specific political party but to benefit all women across the country, particularly the youth and future generations.

"Following delimitation, an increase in Lok Sabha seats was anticipated," Khadse noted. "This bill could have realized Prime Minister Modi's vision of bringing one lakh youth from ordinary, non-political backgrounds into the political arena."

Allegations of Political Conspiracy and Vote Bank Politics

State BJP President Jagdish Vishwakarma launched a direct attack, accusing the Congress of treating women merely as a vote bank. He characterized the parliamentary obstruction of the bill as a "well-planned conspiracy" aimed at undermining genuine empowerment efforts. Vishwakarma's comments reinforced the BJP's narrative that the opposition's actions are politically motivated rather than principled.

The collective statements from Gujarat's BJP leadership underscore a deepening political rift over gender representation, framing the issue as a critical test of commitment to women's empowerment versus partisan interests.
