Gurgaon MCG Invests Additional Rs 6 Crore in Temporary Waste Collection Vehicles

The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has decided to spend another Rs 6 crore on hiring 200 light commercial vehicles. These vehicles will collect doorstep waste for six months. The arrangement might extend further if permanent agencies are not finalized by that time.

Supplementing Existing Fleet to Cover Service Gaps

This decision follows recent work orders worth Rs 9.6 crore issued to four private agencies. Each agency covers one municipal zone for the same six-month period. Under the new plan, MCG will deploy 50 vehicles in each of the city's four zones. These vehicles will supplement the fleet provided by the contracted agencies.

MCG officials stated that the four agencies together are deploying 400 vehicles. This number proved insufficient to cover the entire city adequately. The existing number of vehicles is not adequate, said MCG executive engineer Sunder Sheoran. These 200 vehicles are being hired to bridge the gap so that residents do not face inconvenience.

Additional Measures and Planning Concerns

Another senior MCG official revealed that the civic body also procured tractor trolleys for waste collection. They made a provision to deploy four tractor trolleys for each ward. These trolleys remain with joint commissioners and will be used as required.

However, this move raises fresh questions about planning and expenditure. The Rs 6-crore expenditure represents another temporary arrangement. For the past one-and-a-half years, MCG has relied on temporary contracts. This situation began after terminating the agreement with Ecogreen in June 2024 due to poor performance.

A subsequent one-year replacement arrangement also failed. This failure led to repeated interim measures becoming the norm.

Awaiting Approval for Long-Term Solution

Meanwhile, the civic body still awaits approval from the urban local bodies department. They seek approval for a five-year doorstep waste collection project across four zones. This project carries an estimated cost of Rs 327 crore.

The proposal underwent several revisions to the request for proposal by the state government. It was finally sent in December 2025. Until a long-term arrangement receives approval and implementation, residents express concerns.

They believe spending on short-term measures will continue without bringing stability. The waste collection system remains unstable, with complaints about irregular garbage lifting and overflowing bins persisting.

MCG keeps spending money on temporary fixes, said Chaitali Mandhotra, co-convener of United Gurugram RWA. First by hiring agencies and then by adding vehicles. While MCG is responsible, the urban local bodies department should also speed up approvals, given the situation in the city.
