Guwahati Gripped by Severe Waterlogging After Torrential Rains
Incessant rainfall on Monday plunged parts of Guwahati into chaos, with severe waterlogging reported in the Hatigaon and Anil Nagar areas. The downpour triggered flash floods that submerged streets and homes, bringing daily life to a grinding halt for residents.
Educational Institutions Forced to Close
In response to the emergency situation, the district administration issued orders for all government and private educational institutions within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) area to remain closed. An official document from the Government of Assam stated, "In view of the situation arising out of the flash flood caused by heavy rains in Guwahati city that occurred on 19/04/2026, all the Educational Institutes (both Govt. and Private) are hereby declared closed on 20/04/2026 within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area."
Residents Voice Frustration Over Recurring Crisis
Local residents expressed deep frustration with the recurring flooding problems that plague the city. One resident told ANI, "We have been seeing this problem for a long time. If it rains for ten minutes, the entire area gets completely submerged in water. We have a request to the CM, please do something for this place. We are stuck here the whole night."
Another resident highlighted the practical difficulties faced by working professionals, saying, "I am going for duty. It rained heavily overnight, so I have to go to the office like this. This is what happens when it rains here."
Infrastructure Challenges Exposed
The severe waterlogging has once again exposed the city's drainage and flood management shortcomings. Residents reported being stranded overnight as water levels rose rapidly, trapping them in their homes and vehicles. The situation has raised serious questions about urban planning and disaster preparedness in Assam's largest city.
Emergency services were deployed to affected areas, though the scale of the flooding presented significant challenges for relief operations. The disruption extended beyond education to impact transportation, commerce, and essential services throughout the affected neighborhoods.
Meteorological officials have warned that more rainfall is expected in the region, potentially exacerbating the already critical situation. Authorities are monitoring water levels closely and have advised residents in low-lying areas to take necessary precautions.
