Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Punjab government, accusing it of pushing the state's youth into a quagmire of drugs and unemployment. Speaking at the 39th Dikshant and Seva Samman ceremony of Piyush Muni Maharaj in Jalandhar, Saini called for collective societal resolve to build a drug-free and educated society through systemic reform and nation-building.
CM Saini's Allegations Against Punjab Government
Saini claimed that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, which had promised freedom from drugs and unemployment, has instead caused youth to languish in addiction. "Today a government in Punjab, which had promised the youth freedom from drugs and unemployment, has instead caused them to languish in the quagmire of drugs. In Punjab, the youth are either forced to choose drugs or migrate abroad," he said.
The Haryana CM further stated that political ambitions have pushed the vision of a vibrant Punjab backwards. He highlighted that Punjab is burdened with a debt of over Rs 4 lakh crore, with the average debt per person crossing Rs 1.25 lakh.
Unemployment and Drug Crisis in Punjab
Saini pointed to alarming unemployment figures, noting that during the April-June quarter of financial year 2025-26, the unemployment rate in Punjab stood at 8.8 per cent. In contrast, he claimed Haryana is providing ample opportunities to its youth. He also criticized the AAP government for failing to deliver on its promise to eliminate drug abuse, stating that Punjab is now grappling with drug addiction and gangster culture.
The ceremony, organized by Jain Sabha, honored CM Saini by presenting him with a shawl, turban, and a memento. In his address, Saini emphasized the need for society to contribute towards creating a society rooted in service, respect, and values.
Political Context and Reactions
This is not the first time Saini has targeted the Punjab government over drug issues. The Haryana CM has consistently highlighted the contrast between his state's governance and that of Punjab, especially in terms of youth welfare and economic stability. The AAP government has yet to respond to Saini's latest accusations.
The event in Jalandhar drew attention to the ongoing political rivalry between the two neighboring states, with Saini using the platform to underscore Haryana's achievements while criticizing Punjab's governance.
