Rajya Sabha Polls in Haryana Hit by Vote Secrecy Controversy, Counting Delayed
The counting of votes for the two Rajya Sabha seats in Haryana was unexpectedly delayed on Monday, following complaints from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party regarding alleged violations of vote secrecy. The electoral process, which was scheduled to commence at 5 pm after voting concluded at 4 pm, was put on hold as the Election Commission reviewed the allegations, creating a tense atmosphere in Chandigarh.
Allegations and Counter-Allegations Emerge
Minister Krishan Kumar Bedi of the BJP informed reporters that his party had lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission, accusing two Congress MLAs—Bharat Singh Beniwal from Ellenabad and Paramvir Singh from Tohana—of failing to properly fold their ballots, thereby compromising the secrecy of their votes. "Two Congress MLAs did not have their ballot folded as it should have been and violated the secrecy of their vote. We have complained to the Election Commission," Bedi stated.
In response, Congress leader Ashok Arora contested the timing of the BJP's complaint, asserting that it was deliberately filed after the voting period ended at 4 pm, despite no issues being raised when the legislators cast their votes. "No complaint was filed at the time these legislators voted, claiming that it was deliberately filed after 4 pm," Arora remarked. He further revealed that the Congress had also submitted a complaint against senior BJP leader and minister Anil Vij, accusing him of similar violations of vote secrecy.
Political Stakes and Electoral Dynamics
The delay in vote counting has heightened political tensions, with Congress MLA Bhupinder Singh Hooda indicating that the process would only proceed upon receiving explicit permission from the Election Commission. When questioned about the party's confidence in the outcome, Hooda expressed optimism, predicting that the Congress would secure one seat while the BJP would claim the other.
Earlier in the day, voting took place for the two Rajya Sabha seats, with the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), which holds two legislative seats, choosing to abstain from the polling. Notably, Congress MLAs who had been relocated to Himachal Pradesh ahead of the election returned to Chandigarh in the morning to exercise their voting rights.
Candidates and Electoral Backing
The electoral contest featured three candidates vying for the two seats:
- Sanjay Bhatia from the BJP
- Karamvir Singh Boudh from the Congress
- Satish Nandal as an Independent candidate
Significantly, the BJP extended its support to Independent candidate Satish Nandal, who had previously contested the 2019 assembly elections as a BJP nominee but was unsuccessful. This strategic backing adds a layer of complexity to the electoral dynamics in Haryana.
The unfolding events underscore the critical importance of maintaining electoral integrity and secrecy in India's democratic processes, as political parties navigate high-stakes contests with potential implications for state and national governance.
