Hubballi Town Hall Shut for Cultural Events Due to Incomplete Renovation
Hubballi Town Hall Shut for Cultural Events Due to Renovation

Hubballi's iconic Town Hall, a historic venue for cultural events, has remained shut for such activities due to incomplete renovation works. The first phase of the renovation is still unfinished, and a second phase has been planned, according to civic officials.

Renovation Delays Keep Venue Closed

The Town Hall, located in the heart of Hubballi, has been a hub for cultural programs, conferences, and community gatherings for decades. However, it has been out of bounds for such events for an extended period as the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) undertakes restoration work.

Officials confirmed that the first phase of renovation, which began in late 2024, is incomplete. The work includes structural repairs, electrical upgrades, and interior restoration. "The first phase is not yet complete, and we have also planned a second phase to address additional requirements," said a senior HDMC official on condition of anonymity.

The delay has disappointed local artists and cultural groups who rely on the venue for performances. "The Town Hall is our cultural identity. Its closure has forced us to look for alternative venues, which are often not as suitable," said a local theatre artist.

Second Phase to Address Additional Needs

The second phase of renovation is expected to cover aspects like modernizing the stage, improving acoustics, and enhancing seating facilities. However, no timeline has been announced for its completion. The HDMC has cited funding constraints and procedural delays as reasons for the slow progress.

According to the official, the total renovation cost is estimated at around ₹5 crore, with the first phase consuming about ₹2.5 crore. The second phase will require additional funds, which are yet to be fully allocated.

Cultural Activities Affected

The closure has impacted the cultural calendar of Hubballi. The venue typically hosts events like classical music concerts, drama festivals, and public lectures. With the Town Hall shut, organizers have had to shift events to smaller halls or open-air stages, often compromising on audience capacity and experience.

"We used to hold annual festivals here. Now we struggle to find a venue that matches its historic charm and facilities," said a representative of a local cultural organization.

The HDMC has assured that efforts are being made to expedite the renovation. However, no specific date for reopening has been given.
