IAF's Swift Barak-8 Interception Thwarts Pakistani Missile Threat to Delhi

In a critical moment during the Indo-Pak conflict in May 2023, the quick response of an Indian Air Force unit based in Haryana prevented a potential disaster. The unit, equipped with the Barak-8 surface-to-air missile system, successfully intercepted and destroyed a Pakistani ballistic missile that may have been targeting Delhi, averting considerable damage.

Air Commodore Rohit Kapil and 45 Wing's Heroic Action

On the first anniversary of the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, which claimed 26 civilian lives and triggered Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, details have emerged about this pivotal interception. Air Commodore Rohit Kapil, Air Officer Commanding of the 45 Wing in Sirsa—a forward IAF base near the Pakistan border—led his team in destroying the missile, presumed to be a Fatah or Shaheen-II variant, over Sirsa airspace.

Security forces retrieved parts of the missile from Sirsa on May 10, with videos of the debris going viral online. This swift action by the 45 Wing not only averted a major attack but also demonstrated the effectiveness of India's integrated air defence network.

Expansion of India's Air Defence Under Sudarshan Programme

The Modi government is now working to expand this network to a pan-India level through the Sudarshan programme. This proposed multi-layered system will fuse existing, indigenous, and advanced technologies, such as Russian S-400s, Barak-8 MRSAM, and the indigenous Project Kusha interceptor system. The goal is to protect Indian cities, strategic assets, and infrastructure from threats including drones, cruise missiles, and hypersonic weapons.

Recognition and Background of Air Commodore Kapil

Air Commodore Rohit Kapil's vigilant role during last year's conflict, which may have saved many lives, was largely unknown until now. For his contributions to air defence as AOC of the 45 Wing in Sirsa, he was awarded the Yudh Seva Medal by President Droupadi Murmu on August 14. Commissioned as a fighter pilot on June 20, 1998, Kapil is a Su-30MKI pilot and a Cat 'A' qualified flying instructor, having also commanded an operational Su-30MKI squadron.

Indian Army's Stern Message to Pakistan

On the eve of the Pahalgam attack anniversary, the Indian Army issued a stern warning to Pakistan via a message on X. The post stated, "When boundaries of humanity are crossed, the response is decisive" and featured a digital poster with a silhouetted image of India's map captioned "Some Boundaries should Never Be Crossed." This underscores the ongoing tensions and India's readiness to respond to threats.
