Verma, along with his wife, two sons, driver, and gunman, was killed on February 1, 1992, while traveling to his native village. The main commemorative function was held at Lalhari Kalan in Yamunanagar, organized by his family and the local community.
Memorial Events Across Haryana Districts
In addition to the primary gathering in Yamunanagar, similar functions were conducted in several other districts to honor Verma's legacy. These included:
- Kurukshetra
- Jind
- Karnal
- Kaithal
These events underscore the widespread respect and remembrance for Verma's contributions as a dedicated public servant. His younger brother, Sanjeev Verma, who serves as the Ambala Divisional Commissioner and is also an IAS officer, highlighted the significance of these annual tributes in keeping his brother's memory alive.
M L Verma's Role and the Tragic Incident
At the time of his death, M L Verma was serving as the additional principal secretary to then Chief Minister Bhajan Lal. He played a crucial role in presenting Haryana's stance on key state matters, including issues related to Chandigarh and the construction of the SYL canal. The terrorist attack on his car in 1992 not only cut short a promising career but also left a deep impact on the administrative circles of Haryana.
Since that fateful year, annual functions have been held to commemorate Verma's service and sacrifice. Several memorials have been established across the state, including at Lalhari Kalan, Chhachhrauli in Yamunanagar, Panipat, Hisar, Kurukshetra, Karnal, and Kaithal, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
The enduring tribute to M L Verma reflects the high regard in which he is held, not just as an officer but as a symbol of resilience and dedication in public service.
