India to Get Fourth S-400 Missile Unit in Early May

India is scheduled to receive the fourth unit of the S-400 Triumf air defense missile system from Russia in early May, according to defense sources. The unit has already been shipped and is expected to arrive in Indian waters within the next few days.

Delivery Timeline

The shipment is part of a $5.43 billion deal signed between India and Russia in 2018 for the purchase of five S-400 systems. The first three units have already been deployed along India's borders with China and Pakistan. The fourth unit will further strengthen India's air defense capabilities, particularly in the northern and western sectors.

Strategic Significance

The S-400 is one of the most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile systems in the world, capable of engaging multiple aerial targets including aircraft, drones, and ballistic missiles at ranges up to 400 kilometers. Its induction is seen as a major boost for India's defense preparedness amid ongoing tensions with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the need to counter potential threats from Pakistan.

US Sanctions Concerns

The deal has faced potential US sanctions under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which targets countries that purchase major defense equipment from Russia. However, India has so far managed to secure a waiver from the US, citing its strategic partnership and the need to maintain military balance in the region.

With the arrival of the fourth unit, India will have four S-400 systems operational, significantly enhancing its air defense network. The fifth and final unit is expected to be delivered later this year, completing the contract.
