Indian Army Conducts Controlled Detonation of WWII-Era Bomb in Jharkhand
In a meticulously planned operation, officers from the Indian Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad successfully detonated a US-made AN-M64 500-pound bomb dating back to World War II on the banks of the Subarnarekha river at Panipada in Baharagora, Jharkhand, on Wednesday. Police officials confirmed that the detonation was carried out in a controlled manner to ensure public safety.
Discovery and Initial Response
The bomb was initially discovered by local villagers on April 15 while they were engaged in fishing activities in the river. This finding prompted immediate action from authorities to assess and neutralize the potential threat posed by the historical explosive device.
Expert Team and Preparatory Measures
Led by Captain Ayush Kumar Singh and under the guidance of Lt Col Dharmendra Singh, the specialized EOD team conducted a thorough analysis of the AN-M64 500lb bomb. Prior to the detonation, the squad performed a comprehensive technical survey of the explosion site to evaluate risks and plan safety protocols effectively.
On Tuesday, the team executed aerial mapping of a 1-kilometer radius around the designated site to identify vulnerable areas and implement necessary safety measures. This proactive approach was crucial in minimizing risks to nearby communities and infrastructure.
Safety Protocols and Execution
Shankar Prasad Kushwaha, the officer in-charge of the Baharagora police station, detailed the extensive safety measures undertaken. "Villagers residing within a 1km radius of the site were urgently advised to relocate to safer locations," he stated. Additionally, traffic movement on key highways, including NH-33 and parts of NH-18 along the Jharkhand-Bengal border, was halted for two hours to prevent any accidents or disruptions.
To contain the explosion's impact, a 10-foot pit was excavated on the river bank, where the 227-kilogram explosive was carefully placed. The pit was then fortified with 100 sand-filled gunny bags, acting as a buffer to absorb and reduce the force of the detonation, thereby protecting the surrounding environment.
Historical Context and Previous Incidents
This operation is not an isolated event in the region. On March 25, two similar bombs from the same era were detonated on the banks of the Subarnarekha river, highlighting the ongoing efforts to clear historical ordnance that poses risks to local populations. These incidents underscore the importance of continuous vigilance and expert intervention in handling such dangerous remnants of past conflicts.
The successful detonation by the Indian Army's EOD squad demonstrates their expertise in managing explosive threats, ensuring community safety, and preserving historical sites from potential hazards. This operation serves as a reminder of the hidden dangers that can emerge in rural areas and the critical role of military and police coordination in addressing them.
