India Commemorates 77th Republic Day with Spectacular Celebrations at Kartavya Path
India is celebrating its 77th Republic Day today, marking a significant milestone in the nation's democratic journey. The official festivities commenced with President Droupadi Murmu unfurling the national tricolour at approximately 9 am at Kartavya Path, setting the stage for the grand Republic Day parade that followed shortly after.
Traditional Ceremonies and Distinguished Guests
As per cherished tradition, the National Flag unfurling was accompanied by the resonant strains of the National Anthem, punctuated by a thunderous 21-gun salute. This ceremonial salute was executed using indigenously developed 105 mm Light Field Guns, presented by the 1721 Ceremonial Battery of the 172 Field Regiment, showcasing India's domestic defence capabilities.
Adding international significance to the occasion, President of the European Council Antonio Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen graced the celebrations as Chief Guests. Their presence underscores strengthening diplomatic ties between India and the European Union.
Grand Parade Commences with Solemn Tributes
The parade ceremony officially began at 10.30 am, scheduled to run for approximately 90 minutes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated proceedings with a visit to the National War Memorial, where he led the nation in paying solemn tributes to fallen heroes by laying a wreath. Following this poignant moment, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries proceeded to the saluting dais at Kartavya Path.
In a majestic arrival, the President of India along with the European leaders made their entrance in the 'Traditional Buggy', escorted by the prestigious President's Bodyguard—the senior-most Regiment of the Indian Army.
Cultural Extravaganza and Military Displays
This year's celebrations present an unforgettable amalgamation of themes commemorating 150 years of the national song Vande Mataram, India's unprecedented progress, robust military prowess, and rich cultural diversity. The Kartavya Path, stretching from Rashtrapati Bhawan to the National War Memorial, has been meticulously decorated to enhance the visual spectacle.
As many as 100 cultural artists heralded the parade under the theme 'Vividata Mein Ekta – Unity in Diversity', presenting a grand musical demonstration of the nation's cultural harmony. The aerial segment featured four Mi-17 1V helicopters from the 129 Helicopter Unit in Dhwaj Formation, showering flower petals over the venue, led by Group Captain Alok Ahlawat.
New Military Formations and Indigenous Showcases
The parade introduced several innovative military displays. The Indian Air Force presented the 'Sindoor' formation, featuring fighter aircraft that participated in Operation Sindoor—India's precision strikes on terror camps following the Pahalgam attack. This formation includes two Rafales, two Su-30s, two MiG-29s, and a single Jaguar fighter.
In another first, key Army assets rolled down Kartavya Path in a 'phased battle array formation', simulating actual battle scenarios with reconnaissance units followed by logistics and personnel in full battle gear. This new format aims to make parade-watching more engaging for spectators.
International Participation and Defence Exhibits
The European Union contingent made a notable appearance with four Flag Bearers on three gypsies, displaying flags representing the EU, European Union Military Staff, EU Naval Force Atalanta, and EU Naval Force Aspides.
India's defence prowess was prominently displayed with the Akash Weapon System and ABHRA Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile System—cornerstones of the nation's air defence. The innovative Drone Shakti Lorry, developed by the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers to enhance operational capabilities in forward areas, also featured in the parade.
Armed Forces Contingents and Tableaux
The Indian Navy contingent, comprising 144 personnel led by Lt Karan Nagyal, presented a tableau depicting maritime heritage and modern capabilities—from 5th-century stitched ships to indigenous platforms like INS Vikrant and Kalvari-class submarines.
The Indian Air Force contingent, with four officers and 144 airmen commanded by Sqn Ldr Jagdesh Kumar, synchronized with a thrilling fly-past in 'Spearhead' Formation. Meanwhile, the all-women Indian Coast Guard contingent, led by Assistant Commandant Nishi Sharma, showcased commitment to protecting India's 11,098-km coastline.
A total of 30 tableaux—17 from States/Union Territories and 13 from Ministries/Departments—rolled down Kartavya Path under the themes 'Swatantrata ka Mantra: Vande Mataram' and 'Samriddhi ka Mantra: Aatmanirbhar Bharat'. These displays uniquely blended 150 years of Vande Mataram with the nation's rapid progress and cultural diversity.
Command Structure and Symbolism
The parade was commanded by Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar, General Officer Commanding of Delhi Area—a second-generation officer, with Major General Navraj Dhillon as Parade Second-in-Command—a third-generation Army officer. President Droupadi Murmu took the salute, embodying the constitutional spirit of the Republic.
This year's Republic Day celebrations not only honoured India's democratic foundations but also projected its growing global stature, military modernization, and cultural richness through meticulously planned ceremonies and displays.
