CEC Declares India's Election System Highly Credible
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Saturday declared that India's electoral system is among the most credible in the world. He attributed this achievement to the rigorous purification of electoral rolls through the Special Summary Revision (SIR) process.
SIR Ensures Constitutional Compliance
Kumar emphasized that the purification of electoral rolls via SIR is a constitutional obligation of the Election Commission under Article 326 of the Constitution. This process ensures that only eligible voters are included, enhancing the integrity of the electoral system.
Global Recognition and Trust
The CEC's remarks came during a press briefing where he highlighted India's robust electoral framework. He noted that international observers and agencies have consistently praised India's election management, citing its transparency and fairness.
Voter List Accuracy as a Pillar
According to Kumar, the SIR process has been instrumental in maintaining accurate voter lists. He stated, "The SIR is a continuous process that removes duplicates, deletes deceased voters, and adds new eligible voters, ensuring the roll reflects the true electorate." This meticulous approach has built public trust in the electoral system.
Challenges and Future Steps
While lauding the system, Kumar acknowledged challenges such as voter apathy and logistical hurdles in remote areas. He assured that the Election Commission is committed to leveraging technology and community outreach to further strengthen the electoral process.
