The Election Commission has announced that elections for 24 Rajya Sabha seats, including two from Jharkhand, will be held on June 18. This has prompted political parties in the state to begin preparing their candidates for the upcoming polls.
Vacant Seats and Key Dates
Of the two seats from Jharkhand, one fell vacant following the demise of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Shibu Soren. The second seat is currently held by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Deepak Prakash, who will complete his six-year term on June 21. The notification for the polls will be issued on June 1.
Political Reactions
While the JMM spokesperson could not be contacted for comment, Congress spokesman Rakesh Sinha stated, “Congress aims to contest from one of the seats. A talk will be held with the partners.” The BJP also signaled readiness to enter the contest, though it said the final call is pending.
Political analysts suggest that the elections could lead to strategic alliances and intense campaigning in the state. Both the ruling coalition and opposition parties are expected to field strong candidates to secure these crucial seats in the upper house of Parliament.
With the notification date approaching, parties are likely to intensify discussions and finalize their nominees soon. The results of these elections could have implications for the balance of power in the Rajya Sabha, especially for Jharkhand's representation.
