Jind Storms Damage 400+ Poles, 90 Transformers

Jind/Hisar: Strong winds and heavy rain over the past week have severely damaged power infrastructure in Haryana's Jind district, uprooting over 400 electricity poles and damaging 90 transformers, according to an official. With the weather department forecasting more thunderstorms and rain until June 23, restoration efforts could face further challenges.

Power Supply Disrupted in Multiple Villages

The damage has left several villages in Jind without power supply. Jind superintendent engineer (SE) Vinod Punia stated that more than 80 villages had been affected. 'Power supply has since been restored, but is left at some agricultural locations,' he said.

Weather Forecast: Unstable Conditions Till June 23

The department of agricultural meteorology at Hisar-based Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) has predicted weather conditions in Haryana to be 'largely unstable' until June 23, with intermittent cloud cover and changing wind patterns likely across the state. The department said the movement of a western disturbance towards the hilly regions, along with the possibility of cyclonic circulation developing over Rajasthan and Punjab, could influence weather activity across Haryana from the night of June 18 to June 20. Strong winds, accompanied by thunderstorms and light rainfall, are likely in most parts of the state. Another western disturbance is expected to have a partial impact on weather conditions on June 22 and 23, which may trigger light to moderate rainfall in some areas.

Challenges in Restoration

In Jind, the power department is facing a shortage of store-reserve poles, adding to the challenge of repairs. Temporary arrangements are being made, while teams have been deployed to restore supply as quickly as possible. A power department report noted that the total number of electricity poles damaged by bad weather over the past two months had now crossed 2,000.

Temperature and Relief

Meteorologists said daytime temperatures are not expected to witness any major fluctuations. Dr Madan Khichar, head of the HAU department of agricultural meteorology, said changing weather could, however, bring temporary relief from prevailing heat conditions in several regions of the state.
