BJP national president Nitin Nabin on Monday asserted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir attained 'real freedom' after the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to the erstwhile state. He made the remarks during a two-day visit to Jammu, where he is scheduled to interact with senior party leaders, office-bearers and public representatives.
Nabin pays tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee
On the first day of his visit, Nabin paid tribute to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary at a ceremony in Jammu. Mookerjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, had vehemently opposed Article 370 and advocated for the complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India.
Nabin said the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, was a historic step that fulfilled Mookerjee's vision. He added that the move has brought peace, development and prosperity to the region.
'Real freedom' for J&K
Speaking to party workers, Nabin said, "The people of Jammu and Kashmir have attained real freedom only after the abrogation of Article 370. Earlier, they were deprived of the rights and benefits that other citizens of the country enjoyed." He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking the bold decision, which he said was long overdue.
According to Nabin, the abrogation has led to the extension of central laws, including those related to reservation, right to education, and other welfare schemes, to the region. He also highlighted that the number of tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir has increased significantly since 2019.
Focus on upcoming elections
During his visit, Nabin is expected to hold meetings with party leaders to discuss the strategy for the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP is aiming to improve its performance in the Kashmir valley, where it has traditionally been weak.
Party sources said Nabin will also review the implementation of central schemes and the progress of development projects in the region. He is likely to address a public rally on Tuesday.
The BJP chief's visit comes amid heightened political activity in the union territory, with several parties gearing up for the assembly polls expected later this year.
