JMM Formally Announces Star Campaigners for Assam Assembly Election

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Monday officially informed the Election Commission (EC) that Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Gandey MLA Kalpana Soren will serve as its primary star campaigners for the upcoming Assam assembly election. This strategic move underscores the party's ambition to expand its political footprint beyond Jharkhand into the northeastern state.

Official Communication and Campaign Strategy

In a detailed letter addressed to the Election Commission, JMM general secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey outlined the party's campaign plans. The communication explicitly stated that Hemant Soren will lead the campaigning efforts across various constituencies in Assam, highlighting his pivotal role in the electoral strategy. The party has also formally requested the EC to grant necessary permissions and vehicle passes to ensure the seamless movement of campaign vehicles for its star campaigners.

"We request the poll body to grant permission for JMM's poll campaigning in Assam and provide vehicle passes for star campaigners' vehicles," Pandey wrote in the letter, emphasizing the logistical requirements for an effective campaign.

Expanded Campaign Team and Political Context

Beyond Hemant and Kalpana Soren, the JMM has named an additional 18 campaigners to bolster its electioneering efforts. This list includes prominent figures such as senior party leader Sarfaraz Alam, Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji, and state minister Hafizul Hassan, among others. The inclusion of these experienced politicians aims to leverage their influence and connect with diverse voter bases in Assam.

This development occurs alongside similar preparations by the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee, which recently notified over a dozen names for campaigning in Assam. The Congress list features all four ministers from the Jharkhand state government, along with nine other veteran MPs and MLAs, as confirmed in a notification issued by Jharkhand affair's in-charge K Raju two days ago.

Strategic Alliances and Pre-Poll Activities

JMM's interest in contesting the Assam election has been evident through recent pre-poll activities. Chief Minister Hemant Soren has undertaken two trips to Assam for rallies, where he hinted at a potential alliance with the relatively new Jai Bharat Party to contest approximately 40 seats. This move signals JMM's intent to form strategic partnerships to enhance its electoral prospects in the region.

The possibility of such alliances has prompted Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi to visit Ranchi earlier this week. Gogoi held meetings with CM Hemant Soren to explore opportunities for extending their existing alliance into Assam, with further discussions expected to focus on seat-sharing agreements.

As the Assam assembly election approaches, these developments highlight the dynamic political landscape, with regional parties like JMM actively seeking to influence outcomes through coordinated campaigns and strategic collaborations.
