Karnataka Government Increases Minimum Wage for Workers
Karnataka Hikes Minimum Wage for Workers

The Karnataka government has announced a significant hike in minimum wages for workers across various sectors, effective from April 1, 2025. The revised wages aim to provide better compensation to laborers and address the rising cost of living.

New Wage Structure

According to the state labor department, the minimum wage for unskilled workers has been increased to Rs 15,000 per month, while semi-skilled workers will now receive Rs 17,000. Skilled workers are entitled to a minimum of Rs 19,000 per month. These rates are applicable to all scheduled employments, including agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

Categories of Workers

The wage revision covers three main categories:

  • Unskilled workers: Rs 15,000 per month
  • Semi-skilled workers: Rs 17,000 per month
  • Skilled workers: Rs 19,000 per month

Additionally, workers in hazardous industries will receive a 10% premium over the standard rates. The new wages are a 20% increase from the previous minimum wage of Rs 12,500 for unskilled workers.

Impact on Workers

The hike is expected to benefit over 2 million workers in the state. Labor unions have welcomed the move but demanded regular revisions to keep pace with inflation. The government has assured that the minimum wage will be reviewed annually.

Compliance and Enforcement

Employers failing to comply with the new wage norms will face penalties, including fines and imprisonment. The labor department will conduct inspections to ensure adherence. Workers can file complaints through the state's online portal or helpline.

This decision aligns with the central government's push for fair wages and improved living standards for the workforce. Karnataka joins other states like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu in revising minimum wages upwards.
