Karnataka Mandates CCTV Installation in Temples After Ayodhya Offerings Theft
The Karnataka government has ordered the installation of CCTV cameras in all temples across the state following the theft of offerings meant for the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision on July 10, 2026, emphasizing the need to enhance security and prevent such incidents in the future.
Details of the Theft Incident
According to police reports, the theft occurred at a prominent temple in Karnataka where donations collected for the Ayodhya Ram temple were stolen. The exact amount stolen has not been disclosed, but sources indicate it was a significant sum. The incident sparked outrage among devotees and religious leaders, prompting the state government to take swift action.
CM Siddaramaiah's Announcement
Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated, "We have decided to install CCTV cameras in all temples across Karnataka to ensure the safety of offerings and prevent any untoward incidents. This will also help in monitoring the activities and maintaining transparency." He added that the government would bear the cost of installation and maintenance.
Implementation Plan
The state's Muzrai Department, which oversees temple administration, has been directed to prepare a detailed plan for the installation of CCTVs. The timeline for completion is expected to be within six months. Priority will be given to temples that receive high footfall and large donations.
Reactions from Religious Leaders
Religious leaders have welcomed the move. Swami Vishwapragyananda, a prominent seer, said, "This is a necessary step to protect the sanctity of temples and the faith of devotees. We appreciate the government's quick response." However, some have raised concerns about privacy, which the government has assured will be addressed by restricting camera placement to donation areas and entrances.
Broader Security Measures
In addition to CCTVs, the government is considering deploying security personnel at major temples and implementing stricter protocols for handling donations. The CM also urged devotees to report any suspicious activities to temple authorities or local police.
Impact on Temple Administration
Temple trusts and committees have been asked to cooperate with the installation process. The move is expected to cost the state exchequer an estimated ₹50 crore, covering cameras, recording systems, and monitoring staff. The government plans to use a centralized monitoring system for real-time surveillance.
Context of Ayodhya Temple Donations
Donations for the Ram temple in Ayodhya have been collected across India since the groundbreaking ceremony in 2020. Karnataka has been one of the significant contributors, with many temples dedicating donation boxes for the cause. The theft has raised questions about the security of such funds.
