The Kerala government has declared a two-day holiday on Wednesday and Thursday in connection with the Bakrid celebration. All government offices, public sector undertakings, educational institutions including professional colleges, and institutions covered under the Negotiable Instruments Act will remain closed on both days.
Official Notification
In a notification, the General Administration Department stated that May 27 had already been declared a holiday for Bakrid, the 'festival of sacrifice'. Since Eid-Ul-Adha (Bakrid) is being celebrated in the state on May 28, the government has ordered that Thursday, May 28, 2026, will also be a holiday. The notification read: "Since Eid-Ul-Adha (Bakrid) is being celebrated in the state on May 28, government is pleased to order that Thursday, May 28, 2026, will also be a holiday."
Background
Last year, there was a political row in the state after the government decided to change the Bakrid holiday. This year, the decision to grant two consecutive holidays aims to avoid any controversy and allow employees and students to celebrate the festival without disruption.
The holiday applies to all government offices, public sector undertakings, and educational institutions, including professional colleges. Institutions covered under the Negotiable Instruments Act will also remain closed. This ensures a uniform observance across the state.
The announcement comes as a relief for many who were uncertain about the holiday dates. With the two-day break, families can plan their celebrations better. The government's move is seen as a gesture to respect the religious sentiments of the Muslim community.
