Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan announced on Monday that the state government will establish Nehru Centres of Scientific Temper to foster a scientific mindset among the public. The initiative aims to counter superstition and promote rational thinking across all sections of society.
Key Announcements
Speaking at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, the Chief Minister stated that the centres will be set up in all districts. Each centre will host workshops, exhibitions, and interactive sessions to engage students, teachers, and the general public. The curriculum will focus on critical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and the scientific method.
Centres of Excellence
Satheesan also revealed plans to create Centres of Excellence in collaboration with leading international universities and research institutions. These centres will offer world-class education and research opportunities to students in Kerala, with an emphasis on emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and renewable energy.
The government has allocated a budget of Rs. 500 crore for the first phase of the project. The centres are expected to be operational within the next two years.
Reactions
Education experts have welcomed the move, calling it a significant step towards modernizing the state's educational landscape. However, some opposition leaders have questioned the financial viability of the project.
The announcement comes ahead of the state assembly elections scheduled for later this year.
