Congress Leader Mallikarjun Kharge Predicts Opposition Alliance Victory in Assam Elections
In a significant political development, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday declared that the Congress-led opposition alliance is positioned to form the next government in Assam. Speaking at a press conference in Guwahati, Kharge projected a substantial victory for the alliance, estimating they would secure approximately 72 to 73 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.
Scathing Attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma
Kharge launched a fierce and direct assault on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during his address, labeling him as the "most corrupt" chief minister in the entire country. The Congress leader did not mince words, accusing Sarma of operating with unprecedented arrogance and working exclusively for the benefit of his own family.
"No chief minister in India displays such levels of egoism and arrogance as Himanta Biswa Sarma," Kharge stated emphatically. "He is solely focused on advancing his family's interests and has established syndicates across multiple sectors including tea, education, coal, eggs, land, and betel nut."
Allegations of Widespread Corruption and Cabinet Involvement
The senior Congress leader further escalated his accusations by claiming that corruption has become institutionalized under Sarma's leadership. Kharge alleged that multiple members of the Assam cabinet are deeply involved in corrupt practices and have accumulated substantial assets through questionable means.
Kharge specifically referenced allegations made by Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera regarding Sarma's wife allegedly holding multiple foreign passports and possessing overseas assets. "Investigative agencies should thoroughly examine these serious claims," Kharge insisted, while noting that Khera already faces an FIR related to these allegations.
Call for Accountability from National Leadership
In a remarkable move, Kharge directly appealed to prominent national figures to address the corruption allegations against the Assam chief minister. "I formally request comments from RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat regarding these corruption charges against Himanta Biswa Sarma," Kharge announced. "Furthermore, I urge both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to provide their official reactions to these serious allegations."
Defense of Congress Leadership and Rebuttal of Criticism
Kharge also addressed criticism directed at the Congress party and its leadership. He strongly defended Rahul Gandhi and the Gandhi family against attacks from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that "the Prime Minister has no legitimate right to criticize Rahul Gandhi or the Gandhi family, considering their immense sacrifices for the nation."
Responding to allegations that the Congress party engages in minority appeasement, Kharge offered a sharp retort: "Only those with limited intellectual capacity label the Congress as pro-Muslim and pro-Pakistan. Such accusations reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of our inclusive political philosophy."

Regarding the legal case against Pawan Khera, Kharge expressed confidence that the Congress would successfully navigate the judicial process.
