Role of Chief of Defence Staff

The Chief of Defence Staff is the highest-ranking military officer in the Indian Armed Forces, responsible for coordinating the three services: the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The CDS also serves as the principal military advisor to the Defence Minister and the Prime Minister.

The position was created in 2019 to enhance jointness and integration among the forces. The CDS heads the Department of Military Affairs within the Ministry of Defence.

Reactions and Expectations

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated Lieutenant General Subramani on his appointment, stating that his vast experience and leadership will be invaluable for the armed forces. Military experts expect him to focus on furthering joint operations, modernisation, and indigenisation of defence equipment.

The appointment comes at a time when India faces multiple security challenges, including border tensions and evolving threats in the cyber and space domains. Lieutenant General Subramani is expected to oversee the implementation of the ambitious theatre command reforms.

General Anil Chauhan, the outgoing CDS, will retire after a distinguished career spanning over 40 years. He was appointed as the second CDS in September 2022.
