The Government of India on Saturday appointed Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani (Retd.) as the country’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), according to an official announcement issued on Friday. The retired army officer will also serve as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs from the date he assumes charge until further orders.

Lt Gen Raja Subramani, who holds the distinguished honours of PVSM, AVSM, SM, and VSM, will take over from the current CDS, General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure is set to conclude on May 30, 2026. The appointment underscores the government’s focus on strengthening military leadership and strategic coordination.
Career Highlights
Lt Gen Raja Subramani has been serving as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat since September 1, 2025. Prior to this role, he served as Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025. He also held the position of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command between March 2023 and June 2024. His extensive experience in key military and strategic roles is expected to bring valuable expertise to the CDS office.
