The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday constituted a two-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the devastating fire at a building in Lucknow that claimed the lives of 15 students. The SIT has been directed to submit its report within seven days, according to an official spokesperson.
Formation and Mandate of the SIT
The SIT comprises senior police and administrative officials. It will investigate the cause of the fire, lapses in safety protocols, and any negligence on the part of the building owners or authorities. The team has been empowered to summon records and question witnesses.
Details of the Incident
The fire broke out late Monday night in a multi-storey building in the Hazratganj area of Lucknow. The building housed a coaching center and student accommodations. Fifteen students, aged between 18 and 22, were killed, and several others were injured. Firefighters took over three hours to bring the blaze under control.
Government Response and Relief Measures
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. The injured are being treated at state-run hospitals. The government has also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the fire.
Safety Violations Alleged
Preliminary investigations suggest that the building lacked adequate fire safety measures, including fire extinguishers and emergency exits. The coaching center was reportedly operating without a no-objection certificate from the fire department. Authorities have arrested the building owner and the coaching center director.
Political Reactions
Opposition parties have criticized the state government for lax enforcement of safety norms. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, "This tragedy reflects the government's failure to ensure student safety." The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has promised strict action against those responsible.
