Ludhiana Struggles for Closure as Mathura Boat Tragedy Death Toll Climbs to 11
Ludhiana finds itself caught in a painful limbo, grieving for those lost in Friday's devastating Yamuna boat tragedy in Mathura while desperately praying for the safe recovery of those still missing. As of Saturday, the official death toll has risen to 11, with intensive search operations continuing to locate the remaining four devotees.
Government Response and Support for Victims
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased victim. Those injured in the tragic incident will receive Rs 50,000 each. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann personally participated in some of the last rites conducted in Ludhiana, offering heartfelt condolences and assuring grieving families of all possible support from the state government.
"Punjab has dispatched specialized teams of divers to assist in the ongoing rescue efforts in Mathura," CM Mann confirmed during his visit, emphasizing the state's commitment to supporting both the rescue operations and the affected families.
Heartbreaking Stories of Fate and Loss
As funeral pyres were lit across Ludhiana and search operations continued relentlessly in Mathura, heartbreaking stories emerged about how fate determined who survived and who perished. Many pilgrims who weren't originally supposed to join the Mathura-Vrindavan pilgrimage decided to go at the last moment and never returned, while others who were invited but hesitated ultimately survived to recount the tragedy.
The Bansal family shared their agonizing story of trying to prevent their 22-year-old daughter Dinki from accompanying her mother Meenu on the pilgrimage. While Meenu's body has been recovered and cremated, Dinki remains among the missing. "We initially refused to allow Dinki, but she wouldn't budge," said her father Anoop, his voice heavy with grief.
Anoop revealed that the last call he received from his wife was around 8 AM on Friday. "I never imagined it would be our final conversation. I have lost my wife, and now I have no clue about my daughter's whereabouts," he lamented.
In another tragic account, neighbors reported that Rakesh Gulati had been reluctant to join the pilgrimage but was persuaded by his wife Anju. Both perished in the accident. The Gulati couple last spoke with their son Mohit around noon on Friday, promising to give him 'darshan' through a video call that never materialized.
Community Mourning and Local Impact
Five of the eleven confirmed fatalities hailed from Jagraon, located approximately 40 kilometers from Ludhiana. In a show of collective mourning and respect, markets throughout the area remained closed on Saturday.
Among the deceased were a mother and son—Kavita and Madhur Bahl. Madhur's brother Lovekesh survived the tragedy but remains in such profound shock that he has been unable to speak about the incident. Their father Vijay is similarly overwhelmed by grief.
"The Bahls had actually invited a friend to join them on the pilgrimage, but he somehow couldn't make it at the last moment," revealed local resident Amandeep Singh Khurana, highlighting yet another twist of fate that determined survival.
The community continues to wait anxiously as rescue teams work around the clock, hoping for positive news about the four missing devotees while supporting families through their unimaginable loss.
