The Ludhiana shooting range near Rakh Bagh has been grappling with numerous challenges for an extended period. The facility continues to suffer from infrastructural deficiencies, outdated technology targets, a scarcity of proper practice weapons, and other persistent issues. Despite repeated appeals from officials for an upgrade, the sports facility remains in a state of neglect.
Funds Allocated but Tender Pending
The district administration has finally sanctioned the necessary funds for the shooting range's renovation. However, the actual work has not commenced due to a delay in floating the tender. Sources within the district administration confirmed that the funds have been transferred to the Department of Sports, which is now responsible for executing the project.
Coach's Appeal for Expedited Process
Gurjit, the shooting range coach, expressed gratitude to the district administration and Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain for approving the upgrade request. He urged the concerned authorities to accelerate the tender process to ensure timely completion. "Once all required facilities are available to the athletes, I am confident they will achieve greater success in their sport, and the training environment will also improve," he added.
District Sports Officer's Assurance
District Sports Officer (DSO) Kuldeep Chugh revealed that the estimated project cost is approximately Rs 31 lakh, covering civil work, digital targets, and other necessities. He stated, "The tender will likely be floated this week. I will follow up with the concerned officials to expedite the process."
Athletes' Concerns
The prolonged neglect and administrative delays have become a major source of concern for athletes. One shooter practicing at the range remarked, "The range has been ignored for a long time. The lack of modern practice weapons, digital targets, and poorly maintained infrastructure are forcing many shooters to seek training elsewhere. I appeal to the authorities to speed up the process as soon as possible."
Once upgraded, the facility is expected to provide a conducive environment for shooters to hone their skills and bring laurels to the city.
