West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday led a protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of leaving the state in the hands of anti-social elements and 'bulldozer-happy' politicians. The demonstration, held in Kolkata, was marked by chaos as Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers shouted slogans during her address.
Accusations Against the BJP Government
In her speech, Banerjee alleged that the Modi administration has turned a blind eye to the rising influence of anti-socials in Bengal. She specifically targeted the controversial eviction drives, calling them 'bulldozer justice' and accusing BJP leaders of using heavy machinery to intimidate and displace poor residents. 'They have no respect for the law or the people. They are only interested in creating fear and chaos,' she said.
Chaotic Protest Scene
The protest event saw tens of thousands of TMC supporters gather, waving party flags and chanting anti-BJP slogans. The atmosphere was electric as Banerjee took the stage, but it quickly turned disorderly when some workers started shouting over her speech. The Chief Minister had to pause multiple times to restore order, appealing to the crowd to maintain discipline. Despite the disruptions, she continued her critique of the central government's policies, particularly on economic issues and law and order.
Political Implications
This protest comes ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, where the TMC is seeking a third consecutive term. Banerjee has been increasingly vocal against the BJP, accusing it of misusing central agencies and bulldozing local institutions. The ruling party, however, has dismissed her allegations as baseless and a diversion from her own government's failures. Political analysts see this as a high-stakes battle for the state, with both sides mobilizing their bases.
The protest also highlighted the deep political divide in Bengal, with Banerjee positioning herself as the defender of the state's identity against what she calls 'outsider interference'. The BJP, in response, has accused her of promoting a culture of violence and corruption. As the election draws near, such confrontations are expected to intensify.
