Mamata Banerjee Demands PM Modi's Resignation Over Pakistan Threat Silence
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp critique against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, questioning his failure to address Pakistan's explicit threat to strike Kolkata during his recent election rallies in the state.
Direct Challenge at Nadia Rally
Addressing a spirited election rally in Nadia district, Banerjee pointedly asked, "You target Bengal repeatedly during your election campaigns, but when Pakistan openly talks of attacking Bengal, you remain completely silent. Why this double standard? You should resign immediately."
She specifically highlighted the Prime Minister's recent rally in Cooch Behar, where he made no mention of the serious security threat issued by Pakistan's defense establishment.
Questioning National Security Priorities
"Why did the prime minister not raise this critical issue during his rally in Bengal?" Banerjee demanded. "When Pakistan's defence minister explicitly states they will attack Kolkata, why didn't the prime minister declare that 'we will take strong and immediate action'?"
The Chief Minister asserted that threats to both the nation and West Bengal would be met with unwavering resistance. "Just as we refuse to accept any threat to our country's sovereignty, we will absolutely not take the specific threat to Kolkata lying down," she declared firmly.
Background of Pakistan's Provocative Statement
Banerjee's remarks follow Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif's recent warning that Islamabad would respond with a direct strike on Kolkata should India undertake any "future misadventure."
Speaking to reporters in Sialkot, Asif stated clearly, "If India attempts to stage any false flag operation this time, then God-willingly, we will take it directly to Kolkata." This statement emerged amid heightened tensions between the two neighboring nations, with both sides exchanging strong warnings in recent months.
Earlier, Asif had characterized Pakistan's potential response to any Indian action as "swift, calibrated and decisive," directly reacting to India's established stance on cross-border security threats.
India's Consistent Position on Security
India has consistently maintained that it will respond firmly and decisively to any cross-border threat, while reiterating its policy of not distinguishing between terrorist organizations and those who provide them support. The government's position emphasizes zero tolerance for security challenges from across the border.
The exchange highlights the intersection of national security concerns with regional political dynamics as election campaigning intensifies in West Bengal.
