The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced that party chief Mamata Banerjee will celebrate Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, on the same day that Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal. The TMC, which was voted out of power in the recently concluded assembly elections, alleged that its request to hold the cultural event was denied by authorities at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Background of the Controversy
Rabindra Jayanti, observed annually on May 8, marks the birth of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, a cultural icon deeply revered in Bengal. The TMC had sought permission to organize a public celebration at a prominent venue in Kolkata, but the state administration reportedly turned down the application, citing security concerns due to the swearing-in ceremony of the new chief minister. The TMC has accused the BJP-led government of using administrative machinery to stifle opposition voices.
TMC's Allegations
Senior TMC leaders claimed that the denial was politically motivated. "This is a clear attempt to suppress Bengali culture and target the TMC. They are using the oath ceremony as an excuse to stop us from honoring Tagore," said a party spokesperson. The party has decided to hold a parallel event at a different location, with Mamata Banerjee leading the celebrations.
BJP's Response
The BJP dismissed the allegations, stating that the permission was denied due to logistical challenges. "The oath ceremony requires extensive security arrangements. It is not feasible to allow a large public gathering at the same time. The TMC is making baseless claims to divert attention," said a BJP leader.
Political Significance
The timing of the events underscores the deep political rivalry in West Bengal. Suvendu Adhikari, a former TMC heavyweight who joined the BJP, will take oath as Chief Minister after leading the party to a historic victory. Mamata Banerjee, who served as CM for over a decade, has vowed to continue her political fight. The Rabindra Jayanti celebration is seen as a symbolic assertion of Bengali identity and a counter to the BJP's Hindutva agenda.
Public Reaction
Political analysts view the TMC's move as an attempt to rally support. "By celebrating Tagore's birth anniversary on the same day, Mamata Banerjee is appealing to cultural sentiments and positioning herself as the guardian of Bengal's heritage," said an observer. Meanwhile, supporters of both parties are expected to hold separate events across the state.
The swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to take place at the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, while the TMC's Rabindra Jayanti event will be held at a nearby auditorium. Security has been tightened in the city to prevent any untoward incidents.
