Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Keshav Prasad Maurya on Tuesday compared Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to a child who breaks a toy after failing to get it, in a sharp retort to Gandhi's recent comments on the Constitution and reservation.
Maurya's Remarks
Speaking to reporters, Maurya said, "Rahul Gandhi is like a child who tries to break a toy when he doesn't get it. He is unable to digest the fact that the BJP is in power and the Congress is out of power." The Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister was responding to Gandhi's allegations that the BJP government was trying to undermine the Constitution and reservation policies.
Context of the Controversy
The Congress leader had earlier accused the Modi government of attempting to change the Constitution and scrap reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. Gandhi's remarks came during a rally in Madhya Pradesh, where he warned that the BJP's agenda would harm social justice.
BJP's Counterattack
Maurya dismissed Gandhi's claims as baseless and said the Congress was frustrated with its electoral defeats. "The Congress party has lost its ground across the country. Instead of accepting reality, they are spreading lies and misleading the public. The BJP respects the Constitution and is committed to reservation," he added.
The BJP leader further accused the Congress of having a history of undermining the Constitution during its rule. "It was the Congress that imposed Emergency and suspended fundamental rights. They have no moral right to lecture us on the Constitution," Maurya said.
Political Reactions
The war of words between the two parties has intensified ahead of the upcoming state elections. While the Congress is trying to rally Dalit and OBC voters by raising the reservation issue, the BJP is countering by highlighting its welfare schemes and development record.
Political analysts believe that the exchange reflects the growing polarization in the country, with both parties using constitutional and social justice themes to consolidate their vote banks. The BJP has consistently accused the Congress of being anti-Dalit and anti-OBC, while the Congress alleges that the BJP is working to dismantle the reservation system.
Conclusion
As the political battle heats up, Keshav Prasad Maurya's remarks underscore the BJP's strategy to portray Rahul Gandhi as immature and out of touch. The Congress, on the other hand, is banking on its traditional support base among marginalized communities. The coming months will reveal which narrative resonates more with the electorate.
