MCD Greenlights Borewell Maintenance to Combat Summer Water Shortages in Delhi Parks

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has officially approved the annual maintenance and full-scale operation of borewells installed across its green spaces. This strategic move aims to safeguard city parks from drying up during the intense summer heat, ensuring the preservation of urban greenery.

Extensive Borewell Network and Funding Allocation

Approximately 3,500 borewells are currently installed in parks managed by the horticulture department. To facilitate their repair and maintenance, funds are being sanctioned zone-wise to the electrical department. This initiative is designed to ensure all borewells are fully functional before the peak summer season commences.

Civic officials have emphasized that this measure is crucial for maintaining greenery while balancing water availability during the high-demand summer period. MCD oversees over 15,229 parks, many of which rely on borewell water for irrigation. In numerous locations, pipelines have been laid to distribute water from borewells to neighboring parks, enhancing efficiency.

Infrastructure and Past Challenges

To support parks without borewells, the civic body maintains a fleet of 32 tankers for water supply. However, last year, a budget crisis prevented the annual maintenance of borewells, leading to significant water deficiencies. This oversight resulted in operational issues that impacted park maintenance across the city.

An official provided details on the current funding process: "We have already allocated budgets to four zones, including west and Civil Lines, for borewell maintenance. We expect to allocate budgets for other zones within a week and aim to finalize tenders for all 12 zones by the end of this month. Zones have also been instructed to submit requirements for new motors or equipment if existing ones are broken, stolen, or non-functional."

Community Impact and Resident Concerns

The lack of functional borewells has directly affected local communities. Rakesh Dabas, a member of a senior citizens' association in Saket, highlighted specific problems: "In H Block, there are two non-working borewells; in J block, one; and in A&C block, another is defective. At the D Block Park, opposite the PVR complex, a borewell has been defunct for 7-8 years, and the water supplied through tankers is insufficient." These issues underscore the urgency of the maintenance program to prevent similar shortages this summer.

By proactively addressing these challenges, MCD aims to enhance water sustainability in Delhi's parks, supporting both environmental health and public recreation during the critical summer months.
