Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has made a fervent appeal to the National Conference (NC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress to set aside their differences and collectively urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to engage in a meaningful dialogue on the pressing issues plaguing Jammu and Kashmir. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the former chief minister highlighted the pervasive sense of 'despair, uncertainty, and disillusionment' gripping the region, stressing that only a united political front could effectively convey the gravity of the situation to the central leadership.
Call for Unity Amidst Political Fragmentation
Mehbooba's plea comes at a time when regional political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have often been at loggerheads, with mutual recrimination and confrontation yielding limited results. She acknowledged that the strategy of isolated protests and demands has failed to bring about any substantive change, emphasizing the need for a collective approach. 'The people of Jammu and Kashmir are tired of empty promises and political bickering. It is time for all parties to rise above narrow interests and speak in one voice to address the core issues,' she said.

Mehbooba specifically called on NC vice president Omar Abdullah, a former chief minister, to take the lead in forging this unity. She also reached out to the BJP and Congress, asking them to prioritize the welfare of the people over political calculations. 'The central government must understand that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir cannot be managed through security measures alone. There is a deep political and emotional chasm that needs to be bridged through sincere dialogue,' she asserted.

In her appeal, Mehbooba directly addressed Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah, urging them to initiate a comprehensive discussion on the future of Jammu and Kashmir. She argued that the current state of uncertainty is detrimental to the region's development and the nation's unity. 'The people of Jammu and Kashmir are living in a state of fear and hopelessness. Only a genuine political process can restore their faith in democracy,' she said.
