Prime Minister Narendra Modi Applauds NDA's Achievements in Puducherry

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that the double-engine National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the Union Territory of Puducherry has successfully fulfilled the aspirations of its residents over the past five years. In a significant political statement, Modi expressed confidence that the people of Puducherry are poised to bless the NDA once again in the upcoming electoral contests.

Modi's Digital Outreach and Campaign Plans

Through a post on the social media platform X on Saturday, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the government's track record. "Over the last 5 years, the double-engine NDA govt has fulfilled the aspirations of the people of Puducherry. That is why the people of Puducherry are going to bless the NDA yet again," he stated. Modi also revealed his participation in the 'Mera Booth Sabse Mazboot Samvaad, Puducherry', an online dialogue scheduled for 5:30 PM on March 30.

Looking ahead, Modi is expected to visit Puducherry in the first week of April to actively campaign for NDA candidates in preparation for the 2026 assembly elections. His last visit to the region occurred on March 1, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects collectively valued at more than Rs 2,700 crore.

NDA's Electoral Strategy and Alliance Dynamics

On the ground, the campaign machinery is already in motion. All India NR Congress (AINRC) president and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy officially commenced the campaign on Friday at Thattanchavady, one of the two constituencies he is contesting in the 2026 assembly polls. The AINRC leads the NDA coalition in Puducherry and has strategically allocated seats among its partners.

The NDA's seat distribution for the 30-member Puducherry Legislative Assembly is as follows:

  • AINRC: Contesting 16 seats
  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP): Contesting 10 seats
  • All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJK): Contesting 2 seats each

Opposition INDIA Bloc Grapples with Internal Conflicts

In contrast to the NDA's coordinated approach, the opposition INDIA bloc is experiencing significant infighting and disarray. The coalition's constituents are facing each other in what is being termed a "friendly contest" due to unresolved seat-sharing disputes.

The Congress party is contesting in 16 seats, while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is fielding candidates in 13 constituencies. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which initially quit the alliance, is now contesting independently in three assembly constituencies. Additionally, Congress candidates in several constituencies allocated to alliance partners have refused to withdraw their nominations, leading to direct competition with DMK, VCK, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Communist Party of India in those areas.

Historical Context and Previous Election Outcomes

The current political landscape in Puducherry stems from the 2021 assembly elections. The AINRC and BJP formed a coalition government after a Congress splinter group secured 10 seats and the BJP won 6 seats, achieving a simple majority in the 30-member assembly. On the opposition side, the DMK emerged with 6 seats and Congress with 2 seats. Notably, a record number of six independent candidates were elected to the assembly, reflecting the fragmented nature of Puducherry's political arena.

As the 2026 assembly polls approach, both the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc are navigating complex alliances and internal challenges, setting the stage for a highly competitive electoral battle in the Union Territory.
