Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal over women's safety, while also engaging in what political observers termed as 'Ganga vs Yamuna' politics. The remarks came during a rally in Panihat, where Modi took a boat ride as part of his campaign.
Modi's Strong Words on Women's Safety
Addressing a large gathering, Modi said, "Under the TMC government, daughters are not safe, but under a BJP government, not a single rapist or criminal will be safe." He accused the Mamata Banerjee-led administration of failing to protect women and highlighted the BJP's commitment to stringent action against offenders.
Shah's Counter to TMC
Amit Shah echoed similar sentiments, criticizing the TMC for what he called a "culture of crime and appeasement." He contrasted the governance models of the Ganga (symbolizing the BJP's development agenda) and the Yamuna (representing the TMC's alleged corruption and lawlessness). "The Ganga of development will wash away the Yamuna of misrule," Shah declared.
Boat Ride and Symbolism
Modi's boat ride on the Ganga was seen as a symbolic gesture to connect with the river's cultural and spiritual significance, while also drawing a contrast with the TMC's focus on the Yamuna in their campaigns. The PM emphasized that the BJP's vision for West Bengal includes not just safety but also economic growth and cultural revival.
The rally drew thousands of supporters, with the BJP aiming to make inroads in the state ahead of the upcoming elections. Political analysts note that the issue of women's safety has become a key battleground in West Bengal, with both parties trading accusations.
This event marks an escalation in the verbal sparring between the BJP and TMC, as the political temperature rises in the state.
