Modi to Surpass Nehru's Record for Longest Unbroken Stint as Elected Head of Government

New Delhi: On June 10, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will achieve a historic milestone by surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru's record for the longest unbroken tenure as an elected head of government. This calculation excludes Nehru's initial term before India's first general election in 1951-52. Modi, who took oath as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, will have served 4,399 days by June 10, edging past Nehru's 4,398 days from May 13, 1952, until his death on May 27, 1964.

In comparison, Nehru's daughter, Indira Gandhi, held office continuously for 4,077 days between January 24, 1966, and March 24, 1977. The two leaders, Nehru and Modi, represent contrasting political philosophies and personal journeys. Nehru, the architect of the "secular consensus," shaped Indian politics for decades after his death. Modi, in contrast, has rewritten political grammar through a blend of development and cultural nationalism imbued with Hindutva.

Modi has been a vocal critic of Nehru, arguing that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel should have been the first Prime Minister, as he was nominated by 12 of the 15 state committees. However, with Mahatma Gandhi favoring Nehru, Patel withdrew and agreed to serve as his deputy. BJP functionaries and independent commentators note that Nehru led Congress in an era when it was seen as the natural party of governance, with little nationwide opposition. Modi, on the other hand, rose in a deeply contested political environment, winning three successive assembly elections in Gujarat as Chief Minister before leading the BJP to a clear majority in 2014, reducing Congress to its worst-ever tally.

Modi's tenure has been marked by significant policy changes, including the repeal of Article 370, the abolition of triple talaq, and the construction of the Ram temple, approved by the Supreme Court—moves that, according to his supporters, could not have been possible under Nehru's leadership.
