PM Modi Issues Warning on AI-Generated Disinformation in Murshidabad
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in Jangipur, Murshidabad, on Saturday, urged voters to remain vigilant against what he described as a disinformation campaign orchestrated by the Trinamool Congress. He emphasized that as elections approach, the party might resort to spreading AI-generated videos to manipulate public opinion, citing past instances in Assam and Puducherry.
Trinamool's Swift Retort and Video Controversy
In a sharp rebuttal, the Trinamool Congress questioned Modi's stance, accusing him of acting as a spokesperson for Humayun Kabir. They demanded a court-monitored probe into a video released on April 9, which allegedly shows Kabir claiming he received Rs 1,000 crore from the BJP. Kabir has dismissed the video as fabricated and threatened legal action, but the fallout has been significant, with his AJUP party president resigning and alliance partner AIMIM severing ties.
Abhishek Banerjee's Scathing Attack in Rejinagar
Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee capitalized on the controversy during a rally in Rejinagar, Kabir's stronghold. He criticized Kabir for allegedly seeking funds for personal gain rather than for the welfare of Murshidabad's residents. Banerjee revealed that Kabir had previously demanded the removal of Bharatpur candidate Mustafizur Rahaman, accusing him of engaging in mosque politics akin to BJP's temple politics.
Fallout and Broader Implications
The video has sparked a political storm, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah dismissing the claims as baseless. Meanwhile, a complaint was filed against Kabir in Birbhum's Suri for allegedly inciting communal tensions. The incident underscores the growing use of digital manipulation in Indian politics, raising concerns about electoral integrity and voter awareness.
