Lucknow: The southwest monsoon has slowed down after entering eastern parts of India, which means its arrival in Uttar Pradesh will be delayed. The normal date of monsoon arrival in UP is June 18, and in Lucknow it is June 23. This year, it is now expected to be late by 5-10 days.
IMD Statement on Monsoon Progress
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the monsoon currents have stalled over parts of eastern India, including Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. According to Mohammad Danish, senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Lucknow, the pause has been caused by changes in upper-air wind patterns rather than a lack of moisture.
Impact on Weather Conditions
The delay in the arrival of the monsoon means that the people of the state will have to face hot and sultry conditions for the next two weeks, although isolated thunderstorms and light to moderate pre-monsoon showers may occur in some districts in eastern UP. Meteorologists, however, do not see the slowdown as unusual. They expect the monsoon to regain momentum once atmospheric conditions become favorable.
Meanwhile, residents across the state continued to endure hot and humid conditions on Monday. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees above normal, while the minimum settled at 28.9 degrees Celsius, nearly 2 degrees above normal. According to the RMC, Lucknow is likely to witness a mainly clear sky on Tuesday, with the maximum and minimum temperatures expected to hover around 41 and 29 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Banda Hottest in India
The Banda district emerged as the hottest place in the country at 43.4 degrees Celsius on Monday, followed by Prayagraj at 42.4 and Jhansi and Hamirpur at 41.6 each and Varanasi at 41.2. The weather remained largely dry across the state. The IMD has forecast the possibility of rain and thundershowers at isolated places in western Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, while eastern UP, including Lucknow, is likely to continue experiencing dry weather. Meteorologists said temperatures are likely to remain above normal in several districts.
