MP Chowta Demands Immediate Action on Mangaluru Highway Issues
In a crucial meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) held on Tuesday, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta emphasized the urgent need to address waste accumulation and encroachments along key national highway stretches in Mangaluru. Chairing the session, Chowta highlighted the pressing problems affecting areas from Pumpwell Junction to Thokkottu and Padil to Farangipete.
Encroachments Along Highways Under Scrutiny
The MP pointed out that numerous encroachments, including petty shops and permanent structures, have illegally sprung up along the National Highway between Padil and Farangipete. "Talk to the deputy commissioner, get a survey done and clear the encroachments," Chowta directed officials, stressing the importance of swift action to restore order and safety on these vital roads.
Responding to the directive, Deputy Commissioner Darshan HV assured that a joint drive will be conducted soon to remove these encroachments. "I have already spoken to the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and city police to fix a date and carry out a drive," he stated, indicating coordinated efforts among local authorities.
Waste Management Challenges Highlighted
Chowta also raised concerns about rampant waste dumping along highway roads from Farangipete to Mangaluru. He noted that locations such as Farangipete, Valachil, and Tumbe are plagued by piles of waste, despite awareness campaigns by environmental enthusiasts. "The NHAI should conduct a campaign to clear this waste. CCTV cameras should be installed at black spots. Necessary action plans should be submitted," the MP urged, calling for proactive measures to combat the ongoing dumping.
In response, the Deputy Commissioner instructed officials to identify all black spots and arrange for CCTV installations to monitor and deter illegal activities. MCC commissioner Ravichandra Naik confirmed that the city corporation has already pinpointed black spots within its jurisdiction.
Survey and Coordination Efforts Underway
National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) project director Abdulla Javed Azmi emphasized the necessity of an official survey to accurately identify encroachments. The Deputy Commissioner directed revenue department officials to collaborate with NHAI in conducting land survey work to facilitate clearance operations.
Additionally, the NHAI project director announced that waste removal work for the national highway's internal drainage will commence within MCC limits starting April 25, marking a step towards addressing the waste management issue.
This DISHA meeting underscores the collaborative approach between local MP, administrative officials, and NHAI to tackle infrastructure and environmental challenges in Mangaluru, aiming for improved road safety and cleanliness.
