MP Kumari Selja Advocates for Hisar-Fatehabad-Sirsa Railway Line in Lok Sabha
Sirsa MP Kumari Selja on Wednesday raised the critical issue of the proposed Hisar–Fatehabad–Sirsa railway line in the Lok Sabha, urging the central government to reconsider and approve this long-pending infrastructure project. The debate highlighted a clash between economic viability and regional development priorities.
Railway Minister Cites Low Traffic as Hurdle
Replying to a starred question in the House, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided detailed insights into the project's status. He clarified that Hisar and Sirsa are already connected to the Indian Railways network through Bhattu Kalan, ensuring basic connectivity exists.
The minister revealed that a comprehensive survey for a proposed railway line from Hisar to Sirsa via Fatehabad and Agroha, covering approximately 93 kilometers, was conducted earlier. However, the project could not be advanced due to low projected traffic, which undermined its financial feasibility.
Vaishnaw elaborated that the approval of new railway projects depends on a multifaceted assessment framework. Key factors include traffic potential, financial viability, regional connectivity enhancements, decongestion of existing routes, demands from public representatives, socio-economic benefits, and the availability of funds.
Selja Argues for Social and Economic Benefits
Responding to the minister's statement, Selja passionately contended that the Hisar–Fatehabad–Sirsa railway line has been a long-standing demand of the people of the region. She argued that it should not be shelved solely on the basis of economic returns, emphasizing broader developmental impacts.
Selja highlighted that the project would open new avenues for industry, trade, agriculture, and education, while significantly improving transport facilities for residents. This enhanced connectivity could spur economic growth and improve quality of life in the area.
Furthermore, she underscored the historical and religious significance of Agroha, noting that the town is emerging as a major pilgrimage centre for the Agrawal community across the country. Thousands of devotees visit annually, and improved rail access could boost religious tourism and local economy.
Criticism and Demands for Clear Timeline
The MP criticized the government for keeping the project pending for years, calling for a re-evaluation that considers its social and religious importance alongside economic metrics. She urged authorities to look beyond immediate traffic projections to long-term regional development.
Selja demanded that if the project is reconsidered, a clear timeline should be established for its survey, approval, and construction. This would ensure transparency and allow the people of the region to finally benefit from the long-awaited rail connectivity, addressing years of delay.
The discussion in Lok Sabha reflects ongoing tensions between infrastructure planning based on strict economic criteria and the pressing needs for regional development, particularly in areas with cultural and religious significance.
