The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) continues to experience heavy rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for the districts of Palghar, Thane and Raigad. Mumbai itself received significant overnight precipitation, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disruptions to local train services.
Overnight Rainfall and Red Alert
According to the IMD, the MMR recorded an average of 150 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending Thursday morning. The Colaba observatory recorded 120 mm, while the Santacruz station logged 180 mm. The red alert indicates the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm in the next 24 hours, prompting authorities to advise residents to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel.
Mrityunjay Bose, reporting for the publication, noted that the downpour began late Wednesday night and intensified by early Thursday morning. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed pumps to clear water from low-lying areas such as Hindmata, King’s Circle and Sion.
Impact on Transport and Daily Life
Local train services on the Central and Harbour lines experienced delays of up to 20 minutes due to waterlogging on tracks. The Western Railway reported normal operations but cautioned commuters about slippery platforms. The BMC reported at least three incidents of tree falls in the eastern suburbs, with no casualties reported. Schools and colleges in the affected districts remained closed as a precautionary measure.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and have deployed disaster response teams across vulnerable areas,” said a BMC official. “Residents are urged to stay away from coastal areas and avoid wading through flooded streets.”
Forecast and Preparedness
The IMD has predicted that heavy rainfall will continue over the next two days, with the red alert likely to remain in place for Palghar, Thane and Raigad. The weather department attributed the intense precipitation to a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea, which is expected to bring more moisture-laden winds to the coast. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has stationed teams in the region to assist with rescue and relief operations if needed.
Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stock up on essentials and follow updates from local authorities. The BMC has set up helplines for emergency assistance and is coordinating with traffic police to manage congestion on major roads.
