The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has announced a significant maintenance operation that will impact water supply across multiple areas of the city. Residents in five municipal wards should prepare for reduced water pressure from January 20 to January 22.
Maintenance Work Details and Timeline
Civic officials confirmed the maintenance schedule. The work will begin at 9 am on January 20 and continue until 5 pm on January 22. This creates a 44-hour period when water distribution systems will operate under reduced capacity.
The BMC targets a critical section of Mumbai's water infrastructure for this essential maintenance. A portion of the 2,400-millimeter main pipeline that carries water from Vaitarna dam to the city requires attention. This pipeline serves as a vital artery for Mumbai's water supply network.
Areas Expected to Experience Water Supply Issues
The maintenance work will specifically affect these locations:
- G North Ward: Dharavi, Dadar, Mahim, and Matunga
- K East Ward in Andheri East: Marol, Chakala, Airport Road, and Sahar
- S Ward: Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, and Bhandup
- H East Ward: Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Santacruz
- N Ward: Ghatkopar area
Residents in these neighborhoods should anticipate lower water pressure throughout the maintenance period. The reduced pressure will naturally lead to decreased water availability in homes and businesses.
Reason Behind the Pipeline Maintenance
Officials explained the necessity of this disruption. Ongoing Metro construction projects previously forced authorities to redirect the main water channel along a new path. Now, the BMC must connect this newly laid water channel properly with the existing distribution network.
This connection work aims to prevent future water supply problems. By completing this integration now, the municipal corporation hopes to avoid continued disruptions once Metro projects advance further.
How BMC Plans to Manage the Water Supply
The civic body has developed a phased approach to water distribution during the maintenance window. Officials stated they will open valves systematically for repair work to minimize water wastage. This controlled method should help manage the limited water available during the pipeline work.
A BMC representative emphasized practical advice for citizens. "Water pressure will remain low throughout this period," the official noted. "We strongly request all residents to use water very cautiously and avoid unnecessary consumption."
What Residents Can Expect
Regular water supply patterns will change during these three days. The BMC promises to communicate specific water supply timings to affected areas one day in advance. This advance notice should help households plan their water usage more effectively.
This maintenance follows similar work conducted in November last year. During that earlier operation, sixteen municipal wards experienced water cuts for one full day while the BMC performed essential system maintenance.
