Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Appeals for Cross-Party Backing on Women's Quota Legislation
In a significant move to advance gender equality in Indian politics, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has dispatched letters to leaders of all major political parties and Members of Parliament from the state. He is calling for unanimous support in parliament for the Women's Reservation Bill, officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. This landmark legislation aims to allocate 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies, with implementation scheduled to commence from the 2029 general elections.
Naidu Highlights April 16, 2026 as a Pivotal Date for Democracy
In his correspondence, Chief Minister Naidu emphasized that April 16, 2026, when the Bill is slated for introduction, represents a crucial milestone in India's democratic evolution. He described the proposed constitutional amendment as fulfilling a long-standing demand that has persisted for decades, marking a decisive stride towards achieving genuine equality and empowering women across the nation.
Letters Sent to Key Political Figures and MPs
The recipients of Naidu's appeal include prominent leaders such as Jana Sena Party president K Pawan Kalyan, BJP state president PVN Madhav, YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, APCC president YS Sharmila Reddy, CPI state secretary G Eswaraiah, and CPM state secretary V Srinivasa Rao. Additionally, the letter was extended to all Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha members representing Andhra Pradesh, underscoring the broad outreach for consensus.
Emphasis on Prime Minister Modi's Commitment and Bipartisan Support
Naidu's message strongly highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dedicated commitment to reserving one-third of seats in parliament and state assemblies for women. He appealed to all political entities to transcend partisan considerations and bolster this initiative through collective endorsement. Naidu argued that true societal progress is only attainable with enhanced participation of women in governance, administration, and lawmaking processes.
Women's Role Across Sectors and Need for Proportional Representation
The Chief Minister noted that women are already playing decisive roles in diverse sectors including education, healthcare, technology, research, industry, defence, sports, and services. He stressed that such contributions merit proportional representation in legislative bodies to ensure their voices are adequately heard and their impact is formally recognized.
Recall of Previous Support and National Consensus
Reflecting on the Bill's history, Naidu recalled that it previously garnered broad support across party lines when introduced earlier. He asserted that there exists a strong national consensus on implementing this reform without further delays, emphasizing the urgency of moving from intent to actionable outcomes.
Commitment to Implementation from 2029 Elections
Naidu clarified that the commitment to roll out reservations starting from the 2029 Lok Sabha and assembly elections demonstrates the central government's resolve to translate promises into tangible actions. He characterized the legislation as a matter of national pride, urging all MPs and parties to participate in this historic step towards empowering women and fortifying Indian democracy.
Coordination Efforts and NDA Meeting Planned
In related developments, Naidu has called for a meeting of NDA partners on Wednesday to discuss the Bill and enhance coordination among alliance members. Furthermore, TDP national general secretary Nara Lokesh has instructed women legislators from the state to arrive in Delhi by April 16 to support the Union government and witness the historic parliament session firsthand.
This concerted effort underscores the growing momentum behind the Women's Reservation Bill, positioning it as a pivotal reform for India's political landscape and gender parity.
