Indian Navy Chief Reveals Close Call in Operation Sindoor
In a significant disclosure, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi stated on Thursday that the Indian Navy was mere minutes away from executing strikes on Pakistan from the sea during Operation Sindoor. The revelation came during the Naval Investiture Ceremony, where Admiral Tripathi highlighted the Navy's readiness and resolve in the face of escalating tensions.
Operation Sindoor: A Display of Naval Aggression
Admiral Tripathi emphasized that Operation Sindoor showcased the exemplary preparedness of the Indian Navy, with units undertaking swift deployment and maintaining a highly aggressive posture throughout the period. "It is not a hidden fact anymore that we were just minutes away from striking Pakistan from sea, when they requested the stoppage of kinetic actions," he said, underscoring the critical moment that averted a full-scale naval conflict.
The operation, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025 that killed 26 people, targeted and destroyed terrorist bases in Pakistan, resulting in the elimination of several terrorists. Admiral Tripathi noted that the Navy's actions during this time significantly bolstered national confidence and demonstrated its capabilities at the highest level.
Prime Minister's Historic Engagement with the Navy
Reflecting on broader naval achievements, Admiral Tripathi mentioned an interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating, "Besides Operation Sindoor and the relentless operational tempo through the year, we were also very proud to showcase the breadth and depth of our operational capabilities to the honourable Prime Minister during a historic 17-hour overnight embarkation with the Indian Navy on the Western Seaboard." This engagement highlighted the Navy's strategic importance and operational readiness in national defense.
Honoring Naval Heroes of Operation Sindoor
In recognition of their pivotal roles, the Navy awarded Yudh Seva Medals to Vice Admiral A N Pramod and Vice Admiral Rahul Vilas Gokhale for their contributions to Operation Sindoor. Vice Admiral Pramod, as DGNO, was commended for planning and executing India's response amid tensions with Pakistan, with his deployment in the North Arabian Sea effectively denying operational space to the Pakistan Navy.
Vice Admiral Gokhale was honored for ensuring missile readiness and combat deployment of 22 warships within 96 hours, a move that helped restrict Pakistan's naval movements. Additionally, several other officers received the Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry) for their bravery and dedication during the operation, including:
- Captain Suraj Rebeira
- Captain Vikas Garg
- Captain Piyush Katiyar
- Commander Rajeshwar Sharma
- Commander Vivek Kuriakose
- Commander Kapil Kumar
- Lieutenant Commander Rishabh Purbia
- Chief Mechanical Engineer Manoj Kumar
These awards underscore the collective effort and valor displayed by the Indian Navy in safeguarding national interests during a critical period.
