Nehru Rose Garden in Ludhiana Struggles with Neglect and Project Delays
Nehru Rose Garden Ludhiana Hit by Neglect and Delays

Ludhiana's iconic Nehru Rose Garden, once a vibrant landmark in the 1980s and 1990s, has fallen into a state of neglect and disrepair. The garden, scarred by past violence and decades of abandonment, now sees only a fraction of its former glory.

Current State of the Garden

While residents still visit for morning and evening walks, they lament the loss of its former beauty and popularity. The beautiful fountain that once drew crowds daily is now broken. Swings are in poor condition, and the once-gleaming tiles are coming off. Delays and controversies surrounding a beautification project have worsened the situation.

Project Delays and Tender Issues

More than a year after the foundation stone for the beautification project was laid on March 28, 2025, work has yet to begin on the ground. After three attempts, officials received only one bidder, causing confusion over whether to proceed. The project has been mired in controversy from the start, regarding both cost and tenders. The cost was revised three times: initially Rs 8.80 crore, then Rs 8.46 crore, and finally Rs 7.81 crore. A previous controversy involved a superintending engineer allegedly demanding a 10% commission from a contractor, leading to an arrest and legal tussle.

Visitor Concerns

Hardeep, a regular visitor, expressed disappointment, stating, "Authorities claimed they would beautify the park, where many people come daily for walks, jogging, yoga, etc., but nothing has been done. Such work should be prioritized."

Municipal Corporation Response

Superintending engineer Sham Lal Gupta said, "We have received one bidder, and this week we may decide on work allotment." He added that they would consult the MC law branch before proceeding.

Proposed Plantation Plan

Officials have proposed planting trees of 2.5 meters height, including Seeta Ashok, Reetha, Putran Jeeva, Maulsiri, Kadamb, Bahera, Harad, Sembal, Arjun, Farmah, Palash, White Siri, Black Siri, Terminalia Mentalis, Rudraksha, Desi Bamboo, Banyan, Indian Rubber Plant, and Krishana Fig. Additionally, various rose varieties are planned: Grandiflora Roses, Hybrid Tea Roses, Floribunda Roses, Polyantha Roses, Landscape Roses, Bourbon Roses, Damask Roses, Alba Roses, and Kashmiri Roses.

Project Cost Revisions

  • Initial cost: Rs 8.80 crore
  • Second revision: Rs 8.46 crore
  • Third revision: Rs 7.81 crore

The project remains stalled, with the garden awaiting revival.
