Oil India Limited (OIL) has made its second natural gas discovery in the Andaman offshore region, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Sunday. The discovery was made in the MN-OSHP-2018/1 block, located in the Andaman offshore area.
Details of the Discovery
The exploration well, named 'AN-1A', was drilled to a depth of approximately 3,500 meters. The well encountered multiple gas-bearing zones, confirming the presence of significant natural gas reserves. This marks the second such discovery by OIL in the region, following an earlier find in the same block.
Significance for India's Energy Sector
Hardeep Singh Puri shared a video on social media, highlighting the achievement and emphasizing its importance for India's energy security. The discovery is expected to boost domestic natural gas production, reducing reliance on imports. The minister stated that the find aligns with the government's goal of increasing the share of natural gas in India's energy mix to 15% by 2030.
Exploration and Production Plans
OIL is currently conducting further assessments to determine the commercial viability of the discovery. The company plans to carry out additional drilling and testing to evaluate the full potential of the reservoir. Production from the field could commence within the next few years, pending regulatory approvals and infrastructure development.
Impact on Andaman and Nicobar Islands
The discovery is also expected to benefit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by providing a reliable source of clean energy. Natural gas can be used for power generation, reducing the region's dependence on diesel and coal. This could lead to lower electricity costs and a smaller carbon footprint for the islands.
Industry and Government Response
The announcement has been welcomed by industry experts, who see it as a positive step toward energy self-sufficiency. The government has been actively promoting exploration activities in offshore basins, including the Andaman region, through policy reforms and fiscal incentives. OIL's success is likely to encourage other companies to explore similar opportunities in the area.
In his social media post, Puri congratulated the OIL team for their efforts and reiterated the government's commitment to boosting domestic energy production. He also highlighted the strategic importance of the Andaman region for India's energy security.
