Uncovered Sewer Chamber on Nayagaon Main Road Endangers Commuters
A five-foot-deep uncovered sewer chamber in the middle of the Nayagaon main market road has remained unfilled for nearly two months, creating a serious safety risk for commuters and a foul-smelling nuisance for local shopkeepers. The Nayagaon Municipal Council originally dug up the main road to repair a sewer line and constructed a cemented chamber, but failed to cover it.
Safety Hazard Intensifies During Rain
During the summer, the open chamber emits a foul odor that makes life miserable for nearby shopkeepers and road users. When it rains, the road becomes waterlogged, rendering the open chamber nearly invisible and turning it into a dangerous pitfall. Kamal, a shopkeeper near the spot, stated that he witnesses two to three people stumbling daily, with children on bicycles being particularly vulnerable. He noted that the situation has persisted for about two months.
Residents Allege Negligence by Municipal Council
Another shopkeeper reported that the area councillor was approached and complaints were lodged with the Municipal Council office, but no action was taken. Tarun Mahajan, a Nayagaon resident, criticized the Municipal Council contractors for habitually leaving work unfinished and noted that there is no oversight. Residents attribute the inaction to the council being in a dormant state since the mid-May elections, with new office-bearers elected only on Friday. Officials of the Nayagaon civic body could not be reached for comment.
Power Disruption in Badhmajra Village
Separately, power supply has been disrupted for 12 hours in Badhmajra village of Mohali. Residents complained that repeated calls to PSPCL officials yielded no response. Complaints of prolonged power cuts have emerged in several areas of Mohali this month.
