Opposition Rallies Against Delimitation Bill Ahead of Parliament Session
As the special Parliament session approaches, opposition parties are mobilizing to present a unified front against the contentious delimitation bill. The Congress party has voiced strong objections, asserting that the draft constitutional amendment fails to preserve state-wise proportionality of Lok Sabha seats. In a significant demand, Congress has called for the implementation of the women's reservation quota based on the existing strength of the lower house, proposing that this could be enacted within a week.
Congress Raises Alarms Over Bill's Flaws
Congress MP Abhishek Singhvi highlighted critical issues with the bill, stating, "The legislation received on Tuesday afternoon was riddled with errors. It completely ignores the Prime Minister's assurances regarding maintaining inter-state percentage parity." Singhvi further emphasized that the delimitation commission, an external quasi-judicial body, lacks a mandate to ensure this crucial parity.
The concern over inter-state parity centers on fears that increasing Lok Sabha seats could disadvantage southern and smaller states, a point underscored by Congress leader K.C. Venugopal. Party spokesperson Jairam Ramesh condemned the bill, remarking, "When the intent behind a bill is mischievous and its content devious, the damage to parliamentary democracy is immense."
Southern States Voice Fears of Political Marginalization
Leaders from southern India have expressed grave apprehensions about the bill's implications. DMK MP P. Wilson warned that using population criteria for delimitation could "reduce southern states to politically irrelevant entities." CPM MP John Brittas echoed this sentiment, describing the move as a strategy to transform southern India into a "political colony of the north." RJD MP Manoj Jha has also raised similar concerns, highlighting a broader regional anxiety.
Opposition Unity and Government Agenda
The Congress's stance, combined with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's earlier warnings, signals that the opposition may adopt a hostile posture toward the government's legislative agenda, potentially opposing multiple bills. Sources indicate that all parties within the INDIA bloc are expected to attend a joint meeting to coordinate their response, suggesting a consolidated effort to challenge the delimitation proposal.
