PM Modi in Assam: Slams Opposition, Highlights Bodo Accord

PM Modi Launches Sharp Attack on Opposition During Assam Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Assam on Saturday for a two-day visit. He immediately launched a strong criticism against opposition parties. Modi accused them of keeping Assam and Bodoland isolated from India's mainstream for many decades.

The Prime Minister spoke at the "Bagurumba Dwhou 2026" cultural event held at Sarusajai stadium. A remarkable 10,000 Bodo women performed the traditional Bagurumba dance at this gathering. Before addressing the crowd, Modi led a vibrant four-kilometer roadshow from the airport.

Opposition's Alleged Role in Assam's Challenges

Modi made serious allegations against opposition parties. He claimed they created instability in Assam for political benefits. The Prime Minister said they sowed division when trust was desperately needed.

"The opposition party does not consider the people of Assam its own," Modi stated firmly. He accused them of preferring foreign infiltrators who became their loyal vote bank. According to Modi, these infiltrators occupied lakhs of bighas of land with government assistance during opposition rule.

Modi emphasized that after India's independence, Assam faced numerous challenges. Instead of finding solutions, he alleged that the then ruling dispensation exploited these problems for political gain. The voice of Bodoland was never properly heard during those years, he added.

Current Government's Actions and Achievements

The Prime Minister praised the current state government under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He expressed happiness that the administration is freeing lakhs of bighas of land from infiltrators. This land is being restored to Assam's rightful people, Modi noted.

Modi highlighted his frequent visits to Assam, claiming no previous Prime Minister had visited the state as often. He reiterated his wish for Assam's art and culture to receive wider recognition both in India and globally.

The Transformative Bodo Peace Accord

Modi spoke extensively about the 2020 Bodo Peace Accord. He described it as a landmark agreement that ended decades of conflict in the region. The accord restored trust among communities and enabled thousands of youth to leave violence behind.

These young people have now joined the national mainstream, Modi explained. The peace agreement opened new opportunities in education and development across the Bodo region. People's collective efforts made peace part of everyday life in the area.

Cultural Recognition and Development Initiatives

The Prime Minister contrasted past neglect with his government's cultural initiatives. He listed several important steps taken to honor Assam's heritage.

  • Conferring classical language status on Assamese
  • Recognizing Bodo as an associate official language
  • Declaring Bathou Puja as a state holiday
  • Installing statues of Lachit Borphukan and Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma

Modi asserted that India's history remains incomplete without Assam's rich heritage. Festivals like Bagurumba Dwhou showcase national pride and cultural diversity, he said.

Assam's Growing Role in National Development

"Assam's confidence, capability, and progress are adding new strength to India's growth story," Modi declared. He noted that Assam ranks among India's fastest-growing states. Bodoland plays a key role in this development trajectory, the Prime Minister added.

Modi acknowledged the trust placed in him by the people of Assam and his "Bodo brothers and sisters." Both union and state governments have been entrusted with ensuring lasting peace and sustainable development, he stated.

Sunday's Scheduled Programs

On Sunday, Prime Minister Modi has several important engagements planned.

  1. Laying the foundation stone for the Rs 6,957-crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor at Kaliabor
  2. Virtually flagging off two Amrit Bharat Express trains
  3. Addressing a public meeting

The Prime Minister concluded by emphasizing that the opposition had long neglected Assam and the entire northeast region. He accused them of deliberately pushing the region into difficulties for political purposes.
